How long would you expect a boiler to last?

by | 21/ 09/ 22

As we move into Autumn and temperatures begin to drop, the last thing you want to do is find yourself without a boiler to keep you warm. As a result, it’s important that you keep on top of your boiler servicing and maintenance so that you know whether or not it’s time to replace your boiler before it breaks down completely. At Lonsdale Plumbing, we have years of experience in both boiler installation and boiler repairs, helping you keep safe and warm this winter (and beyond). We’re also on hand to offer expert advice on all things boilers. In this article, we’ll discuss how long you can expect your boiler to last.

How has the boiler evolved over time?

The first boiler was designed in France in approximately 1671, though they have undoubtedly evolved quite spectacularly during this time due to technological advances and high-consumer demands. As this technology advanced, so did their lifespan.

What is the standard lifespan of a boiler?

According to various studies, the average lifespan of a modern boiler sits between 10-15 years, though regular maintenance means that many people can utilise this equipment for far longer – sometimes for upwards of 20 years.

Why might a boiler last longer or shorter than this?

Increasing (or decreasing) the lifespan of your boiler often comes down to maintenance. As with any piece of equipment in your home, the less care and attention you pay to its upkeep, the more issues you are likely to encounter when it comes to maintenance and functionality. For example, you may have noticed issues such as boiler low pressure as a result of poor maintenance and upkeep. This is an issue that must be resolved quickly, as sometimes boiler pressure issues can become dangerous.

How can you prolong the lifespan of your boiler?

There are many steps you can take to prolong the lifespan of your boiler. For example, you can:

  • Ensure your boiler is serviced regularly, by a licensed professional.
  • Turn your boiler on (briefly) during summer to keep the boiler in good working order.
  • Carry out regular inspections of your boiler.
  • Bleed your radiators.
  • Have a powerflush carried out on your central heating system by a professional plumber.

How to increase the lifespan of an older-model.

If you have an older model installed within your home, the easiest way to increase its lifespan is to seek out expert advice and guidance. This way, you’ll know exactly which precautions you should (and should) not be taking to keep the equipment ticking over, and your house nice and warm. After all, much of the guidance you find online will likely be geared towards newer models and installations.

What is the best way to prolong the lifespan of my boiler?

While any of the above methods are integral to prolonging the lifespan of your boiler, regular servicing is by far the most effective method. This is because it puts your boiler (and home) in the hands of an experienced and licensed professional, who is able to carry out any necessary repairs or alterations with ease.  Regular servicing also ensures you are aware of any potential problems with your boiler sooner rather than later, so that you aren’t caught by surprise should an issue occur or you find yourself without a working boiler. When these issues are identified quickly, they can be resolved before they cause you any unnecessary stress.
